Bread Deserves Better Than Plastic
LoafGuard started with a simple frustration: you spend hours making a beautiful loaf, and three days later half of it is in the bin. Stale, or worse — mouldy.
We tried everything. Plastic bags trapped moisture and turned the crust soggy. Paper bags dried the crumb into sawdust overnight. The freezer wrecked the texture. Tea towels did almost nothing.
Then we looked at how bakers stored bread before plastic existed.
The method that never needed improving
Across Europe, families wrapped their loaves in cotton cloth saturated with beeswax. Not because it was trendy, but because it worked. Beeswax is breathable — it lets excess moisture escape while shielding the loaf from the dry air that turns crumb to dust.
It also carries propolis, the resin bees use to keep their hive sterile. Propolis has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties, which is why beeswax-wrapped bread resists mould far longer than bread sealed in plastic.
Plastic replaced this method in the 1950s because it was cheap and convenient. Convenience is the only thing it did better.
What we make
LoafGuard is a bread bag made from thick, food-grade cotton saturated with raw, unbleached beeswax. That's the whole ingredient list.
We use unbleached beeswax specifically. Most beeswax on the market is bleached and heavily processed, which strips out nearly all the propolis and leaves you with a wax coating that looks the part but does very little. Raw beeswax keeps what actually matters.
The bag is sized for a full-size sourdough boule, rolls closed without fiddly buckles, and wipes clean with a dry cloth. Used properly, one bag replaces hundreds of plastic bags over its life — and when it finally wears out, it goes back to the earth instead of a landfill.
How we work
We produce in small, controlled batches. Every batch is checked before it ships, which means we sometimes sell out and make people wait for the next run. We'd rather do that than rush an inferior product to market.
We don't switch to cheaper cotton or cheaper wax when costs rise. It's the same recipe every batch.
